Web Giants Threaten End to Cookie Tracking

Balance of Power in Ad Industry at Stake as Google, Microsoft Seek to Control Web Tracking


 

The end could be near for cookies, the tiny pieces of code that marketers deploy on Web browsers to track people's online movements, serve targeted advertising and amass valuable user profiles.
In the past month, Microsoft Corp., Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. have said they are developing systems to plug into and control this river of data in ways that bypass the more than a thousand software companies that place cookies on websites.

The moves could radically shift the balance of power in the $120 billion global digital advertising industry—and have ad technology companies scrambling to figure out their next play.

Smartwatches abound. But who really wants one?

 

 

NEW YORK (AP) — Computerized wristwatches that display message alerts and weather updates are abound this holiday season: Consumer electronics companies are trying to persuade you to add these smartwatches to your shopping lists.

Samsung and Sony have devices out, and Qualcomm has one coming before the holidays. Apple is believed to be making one, and a new report says Google is developing one, too.

New rides




Surprising exactly no one, the most compelling theme of this year’s Frankfurt Auto Show was hybrids. Though not those of the pill-shaped, parsimonious variety: the ones that tickled our fancy were fancy, and/or fast. Two of these cars, tied in our estimation for handsome darlings of the show, existed solely in the realm of the imaginary, at least for now.
